The Season To Be wary is unique in that it is one of the first examples of Rod Serling publishing stories he created first in narrative form. This collection of three novellas provides poignant insights into the human condition with all its’ moral and ethical dilemmas. Of the three, Escape Route and Eyes were included in the pilot for The Night Gallery, with the latter starring Joan Crawford and directed by new comer, Steven Spielberg. Darkly disturbing, these stories remain relevant today.
The Season To Be Wary Night Gallery Book 1 eBook Rod Serling Mark Olshaker
About a decade after Twilight Zone ran it's last season Rod Serling was asked again to come up with a television series. Night Gallery was the outcome. It's often judged inferior to the Zone. It must be stated though, that Rod Serling's contributions to Night Gallery were every bit as powerful, well written, and as with the Twilight Zone, still hold great relevance today. Essentially this book built the pilot for Rod's second series. Two of it's three tales appeared in the television movie which served as a pilot for Night Gallery. Those being Escape Route, and Eyes. The third story, however which came across the most powerful was Color Scheme. We have typical Serling here, which is nothing typical at all. Rod Serling was a master at his art, and few have come close to matching his abilities.Product details

The Season To Be Wary Night Gallery Book 1 eBook Rod Serling Mark Olshaker Reviews
Excellent read! I love Rod Serling.
Great to see stories in print media format.
I’m not fished with my reading. So far I’m enjoying this book.
Rod Serling wrote some great stuff (The Comedian, for one example) and he wrote some junk and he wrote good stuff in between great and junk but I always find his work interesting. This book is good and well worth a read for Serling fans.
I enjoyed this book. If you have seen every episode of the Twilight Zone and are hungry for anything Serling you should pick this book up. Two of the stories in this book were used in the pilot for Night Gallery. I watched the pilot after reading this book and the show did not do his writing justice. Not sure whose fault that is. Maybe Night Gallery would be remembered a little more fondly had they stuck more closely to his writing. Serling’s intellect really comes through in this book. Only watching the Twilight Zone it seemed he just had a knack for odd irony, which is what you get in this book. He crafts these stories very well though and develops the characters nicely. I guess you can only do so much in a 30-minute show. Steven Spielberg directed the story "Eyes" in the pilot. Kind of a fun fact. Pick this book up and keep Serling's voice alive.
It was Rod Serling's literal and narrative voice on the Twilight Zone that first inspired my love of horror fiction. Despite his talent at storytelling, however, most of Serling's available short stories are refurbished scripts from his television series. I cannot say whether this is from a lack of interest in the format, being preoccupied with writing for his shows, or perhaps a simple lack of confidence in his own clear talent, but this book, the Season to be Wary, is the only volume of his that contains a story that never went before a camera. That is unfortunate because Serling's writing is impressive and makes it all the more regrettable Serling did not publish more.
The three stories in this collection are respectively titled Escape Route, Eyes, and Color Scheme. Escape Route follows the story of a washed-up, middle-aged Nazi who had fled to South America at the end of World War II. He ranked highly enough to be worth being hunted by survivors of the Holocaust (the fate of Eichmann being a recurrent thought to the story's protagonist), but too low to gain in any substantive benefit made available to the Third Reich's commanders who survived the war and subsequent trials. When he finally meets ghosts from his past, he desperately tries to escape, but only encounters a fate possibly worse. The second story involves a rich, bitter, blind old woman named Miss Menlo. Taking advantage of someone else's weakness, she seeks to regain her sight for the limited time of twenty-four hours, and she does, albeit with an unexpected conclusion. The final story involves a racist demagogue in the South who makes his living stirring towns into a frenzy until they burn down a building, killing the frightened child inside. Indifferent to the death, the protagonist soon discovers he has been transformed into an African-American, and arrives on the receiving of his own acts.
Unlike some of the redemptive tales of his earlier career, the moral outlook in each of these tales is decidedly grim. Serling seems to regard most people as selfish or stupid, and those few who act decently are taken advantage of. Rather than offer a hopeful (and in my opinion, unrealistic) opportunity to these protagonists to revise their character, Serling instead gives them instead a punishment they deserve.
The stories are slightly varying length, but each is approximately fifty or so pages; just long enough to flesh out the characters and build up a thorough plot, but not so long as to become tedious. I enjoyed this book; it doesn't exhibit monsters that go bump in the night, but instead emphasizes the worst monsters are the ones we see walking the street.
